Here arrives the much awaited service called Mobile Number Portability in India which will enable the mobile users to change their operators without changing their numbers. The MNP service would be initially launched in Haryana on November 1.

Announcing the launch of the plan, the Communication and IT Minister, Mr A. Raja, on Tuesday said: “November 1 onwards, MNP would be operational partially. We wanted to inaugurate it in Haryana.”

In order to port a phone number, the users would need to submit application to the operator to whom they want to shift to. The subscriber will have to pay Rs 19 — the porting charge fixed by the telecom regulator and it will take around 15 days to do the same. Not to forget, once a subscriber switches over to another operator, he cannot port his number again for three months.

MNP works best with post-paid customers as they are the highest paying of the lot and moreover the Pre-paid customers generally don’t have any problem in changing mobile numbers while switching operators.

The MNP service is expected to be applicable in other parts of the country by December, 2010.
